Michelin in Australia
Michelin Australia Pty Ltd was
launched in October in 1997 to manage and develop the markets of
Australia, New Zealand and some of the Pacific islands like New
Caledonia, Fiji, Samoa and Tahiti. Prior to this, the Michelin brand had
been in present in Australia for the last 50 years through its
importation by sales distributors. Michelin's head office in Australia
expanded and was relocated to Port Melbourne in Melbourne in 2001. This
office houses all its national management and operational staff,
including departments like customer service, product management,
marketing, logistics, finance, personnel, communication and information
technology.
History
In 1891, a cyclist called in on the
Michelin factory with a flat tyre. Edouard Michelin personally repaired
the tyre, which was glued to the wheel rim. He realised that increased
tyre use was impossible without a quick, simple method of personal tyre
repair. His research led to the patenting of the first "removable tyre".
From these innovative beginnings,
Michelin has become a recognisable tyre manufacturer worldwide. Michelin
patented the radial-ply tyre in 1946, radically changing the technical
approach to tyres and giving greater safety and better roadholding,
comfort and longer life.
1992 marked the
arrival of the ecological tyre, born of research into lowering roll
resistance; this reduction meant a substantial drop in car fuel
consumption and a cut in exhaust pollution.
This technological
innovation allowed Michelin to improve the major qualities of its tyres:
long life and good roadholding in wet conditions as well as reduction in
internal noise.
