Goodyear Innovation Centre Luxemburg: UWA Visit

RECENTLY, 10 STUDENTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA FORMULA SAE TEAM WERE HOSTED BY GIC*L (GOODYEAR INNOVATION CENTRE LUXEMBURG) AS PART OF THEIR PREPARATION TO COMPETE AGAINST 78 OTHER TEAMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD IN THE ANNUAL FORMULA STUDENT GERMANY COMPETITION, HELD AT THE FAMOUS HOCKENHEIMRING.

The team was hosted at Goodyear Luxemburg’s proving grounds, where they were given some track time and garage space in order to prepare their car after the journey from Australia. They used the track time primarily to setup the suspension for the new Goodyear FSAE tyre.

During the stay, the students presented the details behind the design of their car to both GIC*L and GIC*A (Goodyear Innovation Centre Akron), as well as given a tour of the GIC*L facility where they were impressed by the level of detail in the typical tyre development process.

We discovered how much work really goes into the design and construction of these tyres. Not only is there an intense design stage followed by rigorous testing, it appears that the manufacture is also very involved,” a spokesperson from UWA Motorsport said.

“This proved to be an extremely interesting tour and gave us new sight into a world of the black rubber things on our wheels we often take for granted.”

The UWA team placed 3rd overall at the event, with 2nd in the endurance event and 4th in the prestigious design event. Goodyear is actively involved in the series, with a new tyre released for this year’s competition, and had a total of three tyres on offer, two slick tyres and a full rain tyre.
