Nitrogen and Tyres

For many years, purified nitrogen has been used to inflate aircraft, truck and race car tyres, as this gas offers many benefits when compared to traditional compressed air normally used for tyre inflation.

As nitrogen diffuses at a slower rate than air, tyres inflated with nitrogen will maintain the correct pressure for longer than those inflated with compressed air, thereby reducing the number of pressure checks required. Stable tyre pressures result in increased fuel economy along with better road handling, improved tyre grip and extended life and performance.

These benefits can be attributed to tyres operating at lower temperatures; stable air pressure within the tyre will ensure its rolling resistance is minimised, similar to keeping the pressures correctly pumped up on a bicycle.

Nitrogen also offers the benefit of being an inert gas and so oxidisation of wheels should also be greatly reduced, as rusting is promoted in the presence of water and oxygen.
