Whincup Declared Champion in Successful Season for V8 Supercars and Dunlop

Dunlop Tyres and the V8 Supercars celebrated the end of another successful season on December 6 after the final round of the 2009 V8 Supercars Championship Series in Sydney.

Jamie Whincup’s fifth place in Saturday’s penultimate race at the Sydney Telstra 500 gave him enough points to snare back-to-back Championship victories, taking the pressure off for the Sunday finale.

Dunlop is the exclusive provider of control tyres for the V8 Supercar Series and applauded Jamie and his team on the victory.

“Dunlop would like to congratulate Jamie and TeamVodafone on the brilliant victory in the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship,” said Dunlop Motorsport Operations Manager Kevin Fitzsimons.

“This was another spectacular year of racing and he fully deserved to be Champion for the second successive season.”

The year saw plenty of action on the track with the introduction of the SP Sport Maxx ‘Sprint’ soft option tyre at designated rounds as well as all new tracks and events such as the Dunlop Townsville 400.”

“The Sydney Telstra 500 was a fitting finale to the year with every team giving it their all, which resulted in plenty of action on track for the fans,” Kevin said.

The introduction in 2009 of the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx ‘Sprint’ tyre at six different race meets throughout the year has added a new element to the V8 Supercar Champions Series that has excited the crowds.

In November, newly crowned Series Champion Jamie Whincup was also announced as the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx ‘Sprint’ champion following the Bigpond 300 at Barbagallo Raceway on November 20-22 after taking the round win, which signalled the end of a successful first season for the V8 Supercar soft option ‘Sprint’ tyre.

This unofficial title was given to the driver who performed best throughout the season at the designated soft option tyre races.
