The opening round of the 2011 V8 Supercar Championship Series in the Middle East was a huge success thanks to the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx ‘Sprint’ tyre. As the track is full Formula One spec, it has lots of room and very good grip, and the Sprint tyre allowed more side by side racing than I have seen for years.
It’s too early in the season to make predictions for a Champion, but FPR’s Mark Winterbottom looked very pacey all weekend, as well as the Triple 8 Racing and HRT outfits.
The Sprint tyre also seems to bring a few wild cards into the game to mix things up, such as young David Reynolds who came in 4th place in race two. I was also delighted to see my old team at Brad Jones Racing end up with 2nd place in the same race. Jason Bright is one of the best drivers out there but has been virtually forgotten after a few years in the wilderness with his own team, but look for him this year right at the pointy end.
It will be a of a cracker season; I can’t wait for the first race on Australian soil at Clipsal where the teams will be back on the standard Dunlop Control tyre. I will also be at Clipsal in my Mustang ‘Sally’, who has just had a very expensive rejuvenation.
Until next time, drive safely
