Small Car Provides Large Boost to Local Vehicle Manufacturing

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), the peak body representing the Australian automotive industry, is encouraged by a recent announcement of new investment in local vehicle manufacturing.

GM Holden has begun the Australian production of the Holden Cruze, the first small car to be manufactured in Australia for more than a decade.

“This is a welcome confidence boost for the local vehicle industry and GM Holden should be congratulated for this significant investment,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

“This project is an example of how the industry and government can work together in a productive partnership that benefits the broader Australian economy,” he said.

“Local production of the Cruze is just one of a number immediate dividends that have come about due to a policy framework that helped secure long-term international investment to Australia during a time of global financial instability.

“This is a clear demonstration of the commitment Australian manufacturer’s have to bring to market vehicles and new technology that will improve fuel efficiency and make cars more environmentally-friendly,” he concluded.
