Teenager Adam Barnes has proved his passion for mechanics by winning the School-Based Apprentice of the Year Award at only 14 the youngest winner in the state.

The Browns Plains High Year 10 pupil from Regents Park had to win his category of vehicle and automotive before he could be in the running for the top award for the Logan, Redland and Scenic Rim region against 10 others. Adam said he had not really expected to win as he was up against a lot of 17 and 18-year-olds.

“I was just happy to be nominated…but it was a great feeling to win,” he said.

Last year, at just 13, Adam applied for a job at JAXQuickfit Tyres at Browns Plains.

Owner Alan Edridge said Adam came in five times before he finally gave him a job sweeping the floors and putting away stock. “He just took to it and it wasn’t long before he was fitting and balancing tyres. He’s just naturally motivated,’‘ he said.

Adam said he then started talking to his boss about an apprenticeship “and he was all for it”.

“So getting (a light vehicle) apprenticeship is amazing and I’m just loving it,’‘ he said.

As part of the school-based apprenticeship, Adam works Tuesday and Wednesday at JAXQuickfit and attends school on the other three week days. Principal Mark Blackshaw said Adam was a very energetic young man who showed a lot of initiative and made the most of his opportunities.

“He decided early on that he wanted to get an apprenticeship and did all he could to get it and the school went out their way to support him,” he said.

Adam said after he became a qualified mechanic, he wanted to get his diesel fitter’s certificate before working in the mines on big machinery and saving some money for his own mechanical workshop.

Mr Edridge said he would clone Adam “in a heartbeat” because he was such a “switched-on kid”.
“Give me five of him and my life would become very easy.
“He’s a brilliant little worker,” he said.

After a disappointing race in Phillip Island, the two seasoned drivers are looking to make history, with Australia’s most successful V8 Supercar team and celebrate Toll Holden Racing Team’s 20th anniversary on top of the podium.

McConville, who finished second in last year’s Bathurst race, pulled back from fulltime V8 Supercar competition at the end of last season to operate his own JAXQuickfit Tyres store.

When approached by Walkinshaw Racing to compete in this season’s long-distance races, Cameron realized his passion for the sport was still well and truly alive and jumped at the opportunity.

“I am really looking forward to making a solid contribution to the team’s success,” Cameron McConville explained.

“I’m ecstatic, to be driving with Garth and for the factory Toll Holden Racing Team it is a wonderful opportunity and one I’m not taking lightly,” McConville said.

This will be the second time Tander and McConville have teamed up, having contested the 2004 enduros together when they drove for Garry Rogers Motorsport.

Tander said the Toll HRT’s decision to sign McConville for this year’s enduro campaign was an easy one.

“Cameron was the obvious choice to me, he’s a great guy, we have been team-mates and driven together [at GRM] before, and we have exactly the same seating position,” Tander said.

“He’s got a lot of experience and even though Cam’s retired from fulltime driving he has plenty of miles under his belt this year.

“Cameron finished second at Bathurst last year, so it’s a strong combination whenever you can pair the first and second place finishers together.”

This will also be McConville’s second enduro campaign with HRT, the 36 year old having partnered Craig Lowndes in 1999, earning a pair of podium finishes – their second place finish at Mount Panorama securing Lowndes and HRT their third Australian Touring Car/V8 Supercar Championship.

“It’s ironic that the last time I drove only in the enduros in a season I drove for HRT, so I’m back to where I started – I guess it’s just meant to be!” McConville said.

To prepare for the grueling endure conditions, Cameron has kept himself extremely busy, maintaining a strict training regime whilst still coping with the challenges of running a tyre retail store.

McConville, who pulled back from fulltime V8 Supercar competition at the end of last season to operate his own JAXQuickfit Tyres store, is contracted with Walkinshaw Racing to compete in this season’s long-distance races at Phillip Island and Bathurst.

To ensure McConville was up for the challenge, he was scheduled to contest two rounds of the second-tier Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, at Winton and Townsville, earlier this year.

Alajajian’s racer will wear prominent JAXQuickfit branding to the end of this year, as a result of an existing relationship with the leading tyre retailer’s Artarmon (NSW) store.

“Chris has been a front runner in the series for some time, he’s a spectacular and aggressive racer, and with his strong links to our Artarmon store, we thought the opportunity to get on board too good to pass up,” JAXQuickfit Tyres’ CEO Jeff Board said.
