Michelin Double Win at 2020 Tyre Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence

Michelin kicks off the year with a double win in Hanover

  • Michelin voted “Tyre Manufacturer of the Year” for the second consecutive year – the first time any company has achieved this
  • Uptis, the puncture-proof tyre developed by Michelin, continues its harvest of awards by winning the Innovation Award

Michelin has been voted “Tyre Manufacture of the Year” for the second consecutive year.

Michelin started off 2020 with a bang at the Tyre Technology Expo in Hanover for the second year in a row, by winning the prestigious title Tyre Manufacturer of the Year for the second year running. Michelin is the first company to achieve this since the award was created in 2008.

The panel of industry experts consisted of professionals from tyre manufacturers, car manufacturers, universities and industrial researchers, and recognised the work of Michelin's teams, which have been striving hard to offer ever more accessible, efficient, innovative and sustainable products and services. Michelin has continued to successfully meet these four challenges simultaneously, by designing tyres that offer ever higher levels of safety, both when they are new, and after several years and thousands of kilometres of use.

In particular the award recognised Michelin's work on the lifetime performance of its products, and the Group's conviction that tyres also need to be thoroughly tested in used condition; this belief is now being shared by the tyre industry and European legislators, who will make used tyre tests compulsory in 2024.

In winning the 2020 Tyre Technology Innovation Award, Uptis, the ‘airless’ tyre developed by Michelin, continued its success at many top ranked award ceremonies in 2019.

The Uptis prototype was revealed in 2019, and since then has been rewarded on a number of occasions for its exceptional technological advances. As it eliminates any risk of punctures, Uptis offers considerable advantages, which will make it possible to offer greater peace of mind to motorists during their car journeys. In addition, it will give fleet managers and professionals the opportunity to optimise the productivity of their businesses, and considerable savings can be made in terms of replacement tyres, which will therefore reduce waste for the benefit of sustainable mobility.

Speaking about the awards, Florent Menegaux, CEO of the Michelin Group, said: “It is a great honour for us to receive the Tyre Manufacturer of the Year Award for the second year in a row, a first in the history of these awards. Combined with the Innovation Award for Uptis, these two prestigious titles reward the Group's strategic directions. This is obviously a source of immense pride for us all at Michelin, but also a clear demonstration of the relevance of the action plans we have made, both in terms of innovation and sustainable mobility.”
