2008 champion Allerton finished second to 2009 champion Waters in the opening 17-lap stoush, and knew he would need to win the second race to have a shot at his fourth round victory in succession.

The BMW S 1000 RR rider withstood Hidden Valley’s intense heat to take his race win tally to four for the year, but it was Waters who prevailed for back-to-back round wins in the Northern Territory.

“It’s been a real battle with Glenn this weekend and a lot of fun,” said Waters. “To take back-to-back wins at Hidden Valley really is all we could have hoped for.

“It was hard work in the heat but we hung in there and the pole position point ended up giving us the edge today.

“Suzuki have done an amazing job with the GSX-R1000 and I can’t thank the crew enough for their dedication.”

Waters is quickly making up the points deficit after missing the opening round while making his World Superbike debut. He entered the weekend in 10th and leaves in 5th on 88 points. Allerton extended his Championship lead to 37 points.

The reigning Australian Superbike Champion won both Superbike races after starting from pole position, as well as claimed a new lap record for the 2.9km Darwin circuit in the second of Sunday’s two races with a 1:07.994 on lap two in race two.

This benchmark on the new 2010 Dunlop control tyre was an impressive 1.1109sec below Jason Bright’s V8 Supercar lap record.

Waters’ clean sweep and maximum points haul has rocketed the 23-year-old from eighth in the standings to third place overall and just 9 points behind series leader Wayne Maxwell.

Waters’ Suzuki GSX-R1000 was also the fastest bike down Hidden Valley’s one-kilometre-long front
straight, recording a top speed of 291km/h in Friday’s opening practice session.

“The bike was great all weekend, and the team did a fantastic job in giving me a bike that was really, really good. It was fast too!” Waters said.

“I put my head down in the recent test session we did here and I knew we had a good setting for the races. I feel I’m back in the hunt for the Championship now. “
Maxwell leads the six-round series on 73.5 points from Bryan Staring on 65 with Waters now just nine
points adrift on 64.5. Jamie Stauffer lies fourth on 60 points with Glenn Allerton fifth on 56.

The next round of the championship is at Queensland Raceway on June 4-6.
