Michelin Wins at The Mountain

MICHELIN has helped Audi win at the Armor All Bathurst 12 – Hour this weekend.

Fitting close to 1,000 tyres, the Michelin team played an integral part in the record breaking endurance race held at Bathurst this weekend.

Michelin supplied tyres to all the GT competitors including the twin Team Joest Audi R8’s.

It was this team that claimed an impressive 1-2 finish yesterday in the Armor All Bathurst 12- Hour endurance race. Both cars completed 292 laps of the 6.213km Mount Panorama circuit. This saw them drive a record breaking 1,814.19km during the race, the most ever completed in a 12 – hour race held at the track.

Each team competing this weekend had up to 7 sets of slick tyres to use for each GT car during the weekend and an uncapped number of wets if they were required.

At the track was Regis Jeandenand, Michelin Motorsport Manager for the Asia Pacific region.

“We have had a very successful weekend,” Mr Jeandenand said after the race.

“I congratulate all the teams, especially Audi and the VIP Pet Foods Porsche team who finished on the podium. We are proud to have provided them with a tyre that helped them perform at their best.

“We have received positive feed back from the teams we worked with over the weekend, particularly Audi.

“This is my first time at Bathurst and I am impressed with the track and I am pleased we have had the opportunity to be a part of this event. Hopefully we will be back next year as I think it has the potential to grow into a great endurance event.”

The 2011 motorsport season will be a busy one for Michelin Australia who will again be the sole tyre supplier for the Australian GT series and with the return of Porsche Carrera Cup to Australia will also be their sole tyre supplier.

The Bathurst 1000 is coming up in a couple weeks from October 7-10 and I can’t wait! Known as the “Great Race”, the Bathurst 1000 is a 1000 km/161 lap test of drivers, teams and machines held at the Mount Panorama Circuit near Bathurst in New South Wales. It has been the premier domestic motor racing event in Australia for decades – well before V8 Supercar series was developed.

In the early years, the race was open to almost anybody with a car that met the regulations and held an Australian motorsport licence. This meant a wide variety of cars, drivers and budgets. In the modern “Holden v Ford “ V8 era though, competition is now a lot closer with race tactics, along with reliability, often dictating who wins.

I am honoured to have my name engraved on the winner’s trophy twice after taking victory in 1989 and 1994 with my good mate Dick Johnston (both on Dunlop rubber I should add), and I can’t wait to see who will be the next one added in 2010.

BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A BMW 335I 2WD, THE EXPERIENCED TEAM OF JOHN BOWE, GARY HOLT & PAUL MORRIS TOOK THE FLAG IN THE FIERCELY-CONTESTED BATHURST 12 HOUR RACE HELD FROM 6.30AM – 6.30PM ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14 AT MOUNT PANORAMA, NSW.

Capping off a weekend’s fast-paced racing, the team’s win in 202 laps and 1254.4kms in treacherous wet-weather conditions was assisted in no uncertain terms by the vehicle’s Dunlop Direzza DZ03G tyres.
Ken Wieden, Dunlop’s Motorcycle and Motorsport Manager said that Dunlop was proud to be associated with such success at the prestigious event.

“Having around 80 per cent of the field fitted with our Direzza DZ03Gs over the weekend was already a massive vote of confidence, but to have supported the entire podium to reach such success only further asserts the tyre’s superiority.

The Bathurst 12 Hour is not for the faint-hearted and we are very pleased to be associated with such high calibre performances,” Wieden said.

Representing the latest evolution in the Dunlop range of tarmac rally tyres, the Direzza DZ03G offers a symmetrical, directional tread pattern along with exceptional grip and excellent drainage capability.

Behind the wheel of a BMW 335i 2WD, the experienced team of John Bowe, Gary Holt & Paul Morris took the flag in the fiercely-contested Bathurst 12 Hour Race held from 6.30am – 6.30pm on Sunday, February 14 at Mount Panorama, NSW.

“It was a tough day on the track but we got over the line as a team effort, and our Dunlop tyres were a big part of that team,” V8 Supercar legend John Bowe said.

Dubbed Australia’s dominant performing semi-slick tyre, the DDunlop Direzza DZ03Gs took out the category in the 2009 MOTOR Magazine Tyre Test, easily doubling the score of its nearest competitor.

The fourth annual Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour Race was held at Mount Panorama, Bathurst over 12 – 14 February 2010, kick-starting the Australian motorsport calendar. The wet and windy conditions ensured the race was not without its drama, a fallen tree across the track stopping the race at one stage, and only 27 out of the starting field of 42 completing the enduro event.

In addition to the 12 Hour race, the packed schedule was supported by HQ Holdens, Group N, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, Improved Production and Saloon Cars.

Dunlop is the tyre of choice in many Australian and world motorsport categories, including the V8 Supercar Championship Series, the 2010 season for which begins in Abu Dhabi from February 18 – 20.
