For the second race in succession, Red Bull’s reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel has converted pole position to a win on Pirelli tyres. Tyre strategy proved crucial to the race, with the drivers who best looked after their tyres in the punishing conditions of Malaysia being rewarded with the top positions. Just like the opening grand prix of the year in Australia, McLaren was second and Lotus Renault was third – but this time it was thanks to Jenson Button and Nick Heidfeld, who went from Pirelli test driver to podium finisher in less than six months.
As for the drivers, Fernando Alonso has driven the most distance on Pirelli tyres with a total of 2826 kilometres, ahead of Michael Schumacher (2474), Felipe Massa (2417), Mark Webber (2373), Rubens Barrichello (2198) and Sergio Perez (2129).

Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), 20 November 2010 – Each team today completed an average of 80 laps and 5500 kilometres on the Yas Marina circuit, adding to the total of 5000 kilometres run yesterday, to conclude the first official tyre test for Pirelli: the exclusive Formula One tyre supplier from next year.
The Pirelli F1 team, composed of a variety of international personnel, is based in Milan at the Pirelli Tyre Research and Development Centre. This facility is at the heart of the Pirelli Group’s tyre technology, which employs 1000 researchers based in five centres all over the world. Motorsport is the laboratory in which Pirelli has traditionally created some of the most important innovations in the tyre sector, so it is of crucial importance.
Spanish driver Pedro de la Rosa will replace Nick Heidfeld as Pirelli’s official test driver, as the legendary Italian firm gears up for its Formula One return.
Heidfeld was recently appointed as a race driver for Sauber over the remainder of this season after carrying out the initial tests with Pirelli’s new Formula One tyres. He was replaced by Frenchman Romain Grosjean at Monza last week, who will continue to test for Pirelli alongside de la Rosa.
Having run its Formula One PZero tyre for the first time in Italy last month, Pirelli’s eagerly-anticipated Formula One test campaign continued this week at the Le Castellet circuit in the south of France, again with Nick Heidfeld at the wheel of the Toyota TF109 fitted with Pirelli’s latest Formula One tyres.
