Whincup finished fourth to Team Vodafone teammate Craig Lowndes in the 84-lap race to make his series lead virtually unassailable with two races remaining in the season.

Lowndes used a set of near-new sprint tyres to finish ahead of Ford’s Steven Johnson and Holden’s Garth Tander.

Holden driver Davison admitted he was “shattered” by a freak incident in which his car skidded on oil from an earlier accident near pit lane, causing him to hit a tyre wall and damage the steering.

Davison’s failure to finish after the crash means Whincup now holds a 281-point championship lead. With 300 points on offer in the final round in Sydney next month, Whincup just needs to finish one of those races to claim the 2009 V8 title.

FPR driver Mark Winterbottom claimed the overall honours, but strong performances by Davison and a poor weekend for Ford’s Jamie Whincup has seen the HRT driver cut Whincup’s championship lead to just 32 points going into the next round at Phillip Island.

Davison’s teammate Garth Tander also had a good weekend, claiming a win and second place on the opening day’s two races. Winterbottom finished with two victories from the weekend’s four race events, while Ford’s Craig Lowndes picked up the remaining race win.

CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS
