Dunlop explains the benefits of silica
Silica tyres last longer than conventional tyres and provide greater car efficiency, meaning less fuel is used and fewer environmentally-harmful emissions are produced over time.
Tyre designers have traditionally battled with the challenge of providing a tyre that combines fuel efficiency without compromising performance. The introduction of Silica into the tyre tread has solved this problem and enabled manufacturers to produce tyres which provide improved performance and lower rolling resistance simultaneously.
Research has shown that the use of silica can reduce rolling resistance by up to 25 percent. Assuming correct tyre pressures are maintained, and making allowances for varying speeds and different driving characteristics, a 25 percent reduction in rolling resistance equates to around 4 percent fuel saving.
