The JAXQuickfit Tyres
team has played a vital role in MOTOR magazine’s annual tyre test
for 2005.The story, by Philip Lord, in the December 2005 issue of MOTOR,
pays tribute to the crew who changed the
wheels and tyres tested by race
and rally ace Rick Bates in the gruelling survey.
Over two days at Queanbeyan’s
Sutton Road Driver Training Centre, Bates and the MOTOR crew assessed a
variety of high performance tyres including examples from Dunlop,
Bridgestone,
Michelin, Pirelli and Goodyear. The JAXQuickfit
Tyres
crew was responsible
for setting up the test car (an FPV F6 Typhoon) with each set of
tyres –
Bates was not allowed to see them. Representatives from most of the companies
were on hand to ensure the test procedure was conducted fairly.
It involved
wet and dry cornering and braking performances as well as Bates’ impressions
of each set of tyres. What journalist Philip Lord said: “The guys from
JAXQuickfit Tyres were the linchpins of this whole operation – we
simply wouldn’t have been able to get everything done without ‘em.
Especially because I wasn’t allowed to use the rattle gun. And I wouldn’t
know how to operate a
tyre fitting machine if it landed on me ((which it
nearly did on Day Two when the boys learned I wanted to re-test everything).
“So, a V8 Supercar-like pit crew to get
tyres onto rims and perfectly
balanced was a bloody good thing. “The crew, consisting of Michael
Palmer, from JAXQuickfit HQ in Sydney,
Craig White, franchisee of JAXQuickfit,
Belconnen ACT, and Damien Hollows from JAXQuickfit, Penrith, NSW, were consummate
professionals.
“The
latest
tyre-changing gear was brought down from Sydney by supplier Eagle SMF. Leon Vitagliani, owner and operator of Eagle SMF, with his brothers
and father, put the new machines through their paces. “So, from all
at MOTOR, thanks, we couldn’t have got the job done without you.”
