About Alfa Romeo
Founded in Milan in 1910 and originally known as A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili), Alfa Romeo has been established for more than 100 years. Switching to the more familiar Alfa Romeo brand in 1920 (named after company director Nicola Romeo), the manufacturer was bought by Fiat in 1986.
Despite Alfa's early issues with product reliability, today the luxury sports brand enjoys a much improved and highly respected reputation. Alfa's early vehicles were designed specifically for the Italian market, and in particular for racing, with more powerful engines integrated. As Alfa continued its focus on racing in the 1970's, it ran into financial problems, despite producing the classic "Pantera" model still favoured by Italian police today.
Alfa Romeo devotees in Italy (known as "Alfisti") remain loyal to the classic sports car brand, and Alfa Romeo enjoys a strong following worldwide amongst true car enthusiasts.
