About Audi
Named after a Latin word meaning "to hear", German manufacturer Audi was founded by August Horsch in 1909. Following production of the first Audi vehicle, the Audi Type A 10/22 hp Sport-Phaeton, in 1910, Audi then became the first German manufacturer to create a left-handed drive car, the Audi Type K, which made for much safer overtaking. Audi merged with several other German carmakers in 1932 to become Auto Union, which produced the Audi Front, the first European car with both front wheel drive and a six cylinder engine.
The company suffered enormously during the Second World War, firstly being requisitioned for heavy parts for use in military production, then being bombed and finally being dismantled as part of war reparations. However, a reformed Audi company was re-launched in 1949, and by 1959 Daimler-Benz had a 100% holding stake. Now a subsidiary of Volkswagen based in Ingolstadt, Audi is renowned for its Quattro all wheel drive technology, enjoying strong sales and an excellent reputation for quality and product innovation.
