A prestige subsidiary of Volkswagen today, Bentley was founded in 1919 by Walter Owen Bentley. Originally known for manufacturing WW1 aircraft engines, Bentley produced its first cars in 1921, using light metal aluminium instead of the usual cast iron in its pistons.
Largely due to the assistance of wealthy benefactor racing enthusiasts, Bentley cars won the World's oldest sports car race, Le Mans, four times running between 1927 and 1930. One of these enthusiasts, Woolf Barnato, famously raced his Bentley against a train (Le Train Bleu) from Cannes to London, and won.
In 1931 Bentley was sold to Rolls Royce, as the Depression meant that few could afford the manufacturer's pricier vehicles, and in 1933 the Bentley 3.6 Litre was produced. Following further departure from the original Bentley style, in 1980 engineering firm Vickers took over the parent company, and Bentley resumed manufacture of cars more akin to its traditional and recognisable approach. However, in 1998, Rolls Royce and Bentley Motors were sold to Volkswagen for 430m.
Today, re-established as a strong and revered car manufacturer brand, Bentley continues to build sales yearly.
