About Daewoo
Established in 1967 and named after the Korean word for "great universe", Daewoo had a moderately successful but relatively brief history. Although some parts of the company exist today as independent units, the brand was disbanded in 1999, following the Asian financial crisis.
Prior to its demise, Daewoo was the second largest conglomerate in Korea, after Hyundai. Daewoo had a reputation for producing affordable cars, and the company's sales in Australia were due in part to advertising featuring an endearing dog, which became something of a household name. The 1997 Leganza was one of the company's more successful models.
Daewoo's automotive arm was sold to General Motors in 2001, and GM plans to re-badge several Daewoos as models for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Opel, Buick and Holden.
