About Hummer
Founded in 1992 and defunct as of 2010, the Hummer is a very distinctive car based upon a military design. For many the Hummer's large, powerful look conveys a sense of safety, for others it references a rugged lifestyle. The brand enjoyed the spotlight for a while, becoming the vehicle of choice for Arnold Schwarzenegger and other stars.
There were three variants, the H1, H2 and H3, with the H1 being the closest to its military forebear. Originally part of the General Motors group of companies, GM tried to sell the brand when they struck financial difficulties in recent years. A Chinese bid to buy the company failed and now the last Hummer has rolled off the line as of May 2010.
With its bulky, pseudo-military design it was always a niche vehicle and attracted plenty of scorn from environmentalists. However the Hummer also enjoyed an equal amount of praise from those who loved its sturdy aesthetics. In 1993 Team racing Hummer was formed, and a modified rear-wheel drive Hummer took out third place in the 2009 Dakar Rally.
