About Mazda
The Mazda name is said to derive from a god of wisdom, intelligence and harmony. This is fitting given the brand's reputation for engineering, aesthetic and ergonomic excellence. Founded in 1920, the company's early work saw it produce weapons for the Japanese military during the war. Although the Mazda brand name was not officially adopted as the company name until 1984, all its cars have borne that name.
Early in the 1960's Mazda started to distinguish itself from other car makers by developing the rotary engine, as opposed to the multiple piston engines that almost every other car uses. The move paid off, as export sales began to increase.
Today Mazda produces a range of sedans, wagons, SUV's and work vehicles, and retains its connection with the rotary engine via the aspirational RX8, a vehicle that has garnered strong praise from motoring writers. Mazda cars enjoy a reputation for high quality and stylish appeal that has helped them sell some 1.3 million vehicles globally.
