Peugeot is part of the PSA Peugeot Citroen group, Europe's second largest car maker. The brand has enormous credibility with car enthusiasts, particularly after many years of success in the World Rally Championships. Incredibly, the company dates back to 1810 when it primarily made bicycles. The company made its first car in 1896 and enjoyed some success in racing. In the post war years the brand continued to grow, and in 1974 it bought into Citroen, thus creating the PSA group. A buyout of the troubled Chrysler Europe led to problems for the group during the 1980's, however by the 1990's they were aiming for 4 million sales per year. This proved overly ambitious, and the brand has cut back on some manufacturing jobs choosing instead to focus on quality and innovation.

Peugeot has been proactive in exploring electric engines as well as playing a big part in popularising diesel. The brand's range is known for its excellence in design and engineering and has developed a strong following in Australia.
