About Proton

A relative newcomer to the global automobile industry, Proton was founded in 1983 by the Malaysian government and retains strong governmental links today. Initially borrowing designs and technology from Mitsubishi, Proton also paid homage to Alfa Romeo aesthetically.

As Proton's product line featured little more than rehashed Mitsubishi models, initially the brand did not cause a major stir. However, the acquisition of iconic British brand Lotus in 1996 changed all of this. With Proton having access to Lotus engineering, the brand's credentials and reputation improved markedly.

The Satria "hot hatch" enjoyed a cult following in Australia when it was introduced, and models such as the Gen-2 small car and Waja sedan have added to the brand's improving reputation. A growing dealer network has created more confidence and, despite a downturn in sales in Malaysia, the global outlook for Proton remains positive.
