When To Replace Worn Tyres
Tyres are the only part of your car that remains in constant contact with the road. They are responsible for stability, braking, handling, safety, fuel economy and performance attributes of your vehicle and ensuring that they are in the best possible condition is imperative. There are several easy ways to tell when your tyres need replacing, and drivers should look out for signs of wear on a regular basis.
When To Replace Worn Tyres
Tyres are a part of your vehicle that receives an incredible amount of wear, and they don’t always wear evenly. Replacing worn tyres is a vital safety issue. Observe these important signs that your tyres need replacing.
- Tyres are manufactured with wear markers, small blocks of rubber in the tread that are often marked by arrows on the upper sidewall to help you find them. Don’t wait to replace the tyres until the wear markers are even with the tread (indicating 1.6mm of tread remaining) as this means that your tyre is unroadworthy
- Replace your tyres when there is about 2mm of tread remaining. You can measure this using a tread depth metre. You may find one for free at a tyre retailer, or buy one for a small cost from auto retailers.
- Check for signs of uneven wear. This may result from certain driving styles, from towing, or from problems in the vehicle such as poor wheel alignments or wearing suspension. Check the entire surface of the tread for wear, not just the outside edge.
- Even if your tyres look to have sufficient tread, replace any tyre older than 5 years. The rubbers of which tyres are composed undergo chemical transformations which, over time, mean that performance deteriorates and safety are compromised
- Check the age of your tyre by looking for a four digit build date number indicating date of manufacture. This number can be read in two segments, the first two numbers indicating the week of manufacture, and the second two the year. For example, 2308 indicates a tyre made in the 23rd week of 2008
- Check your spare tyre! There is no point in carrying a spare that is in worse condition than the tyre it is meant to replace. As with your other tyres, regularly check air pressure in your spare.
Checking the condition of your tyres at least fortnightly could save you more than money in the long run – it may save your life. Take your vehicle to an experienced and trusted repairer and ensure that your worn tyres are replaced with quality new ones and aligned properly.
Changing worn tyres
Taking care of your vehicle’s tyres is one of the simplest and most important maintenance tasks that you can undertake. Tyres that are unevenly worn, have too little tread or are too old can not only make your car less pleasurable and more expensive to drive, they are a genuine danger to your safety and that of other road users.
